Invoice Profit Calculator
What an invoice actually earns after costs, fees, tax and the time it took to get paid.
Work out a tip, split a bill, and see what each person owes to the penny.
The Tip Calculator works out a tip at any rate on the pre-tax or tax-inclusive amount, splits a bill evenly or by what each person had with the tip shared proportionally, and warns when a service charge means you are about to tip twice.
Tipping arithmetic is easy and splitting a bill is not, which is why every group of six ends up with somebody doing it on a phone while the card machine waits.
This does both properly. The tip at any rate, on the bill before or after tax — a distinction worth having, because tipping on the tax-inclusive total means tipping on the tax. The split, either evenly or by what each person actually had, with the tip and any service charge shared in the same proportion. And the rounding, so the total comes to a sensible number and the difference is shown rather than quietly absorbed by whoever paid.
It also handles the case everybody gets wrong: a bill that already includes a service charge. Adding a tip on top of a 12.5% service charge is tipping twice, and the calculator says so rather than letting you do it by accident.
Tipping on the tax is a choice, so it is shown as one.
With tax and tip shared in the same proportion.
A tip on top of 12.5% service is tipping twice.
To a sensible figure, with the difference shown.
Enter the total you want to pay and it finds the tip.
And say whether it already includes a service charge.
Or enter a total you want to reach and it works the tip out backwards.
Tip on the bill before tax, or on the tax-inclusive total.
Evenly, or by what each person had, with the tip shared proportionally.
To a sensible total, with the difference shown rather than absorbed.
Convention varies, but tipping on the pre-tax amount is the more defensible position — the tax is not part of what the service was worth. On a 20% tax, the difference on a £100 bill is about £3.
Usually not. A service charge is a tip that has already been added. If the service was exceptional and you want to add more, that is a choice rather than an expectation.
Work out each person’s share of the pre-tip total, then apply the same proportion to the tax, the service charge and the tip. Splitting the food evenly but the tip proportionally is the usual source of confusion.
It is entirely local. Fifteen to 20% is expected in the United States, 10 to 12.5% in the UK where no service charge applies, and nothing at all in Japan, where tipping can cause offence.
