A properly formed credit note, with the reason and the tax credited back.
Paste the lines you are reversing — description, quantity, unit price — so the credit note mirrors the original rather than carrying a lump sum. Crediting specific lines is what lets stock and tax both reconcile.
The Credit Note Generator produces a properly formed credit note — its own sequential reference, the original invoice named, a recognised reason, the specific lines credited, and the tax credited at the rate the original carried.
A credit note reduces what a customer owes against an invoice already issued, and it has four requirements that a hand-typed one usually misses. Its own sequential reference, from a separate series. A reference to the original invoice and its date. A stated reason from the list tax authorities actually recognise. And the tax credited as well as the net, at the rate the original carried.
That last one is the expensive omission: crediting the gross without accounting for the tax leaves the tax overpaid on your return, and crediting only the net leaves the customer holding tax they cannot reclaim.
This produces a credit note that has all four, prints its amounts as positive figures under a CREDIT heading rather than as negatives — which is how accounting systems and customers both expect to read one — and exports as PDF, CSV, JSON or UBL alongside the invoice it corrects.

A document that reduces the amount a customer owes against an invoice already issued. It is the correct way to reverse or reduce an invoice, because the original stays in your sequence and the correction is visible.
Yes, from a separate sequence, and it must reference the original invoice. Reusing the invoice number breaks both sequences and makes the correction impossible to audit.
It is credited at the rate the original invoice carried, shown separately from the net. Both parties then adjust their returns in the period the credit note is issued.
No. A credit note is an accounting document that reduces a debt. A refund is money moving back. A credit note can be settled by a refund, or by offsetting it against the next invoice.
As soon as the reason for it is known. Most tax systems expect the adjustment in the return period in which it is made, and an uncorrected error compounds across every subsequent statement.
