Principal vs interest
The EMI Calculator works out the equated monthly instalment — a fixed payment covering both interest and principal, sized so the loan clears exactly at the end of the term — and shows the split lenders rarely lead with: how much of what you repay is interest rather than the sum you borrowed.
An EMI is a fixed monthly payment covering both interest and principal, sized so the loan clears exactly at the end of the term. Enter the principal, the annual rate and the tenure in months or years to get the instalment and the full cost of the loan.
Alongside the number you get the split that lenders rarely lead with: how much of the total you repay is interest rather than the sum you borrowed. On a long tenure at a high rate, interest can approach or exceed the principal itself. The tenure slider makes the trade-off visible, because stretching a loan lowers the monthly instalment while raising the total paid, and seeing both move together is the point of the tool.

Set the term in months or years and watch the instalment and total interest move in opposite directions.
The chart and table show how much of your repayment is principal against interest over time.
Equated Monthly Instalment. It is a fixed monthly amount covering both interest and principal repayment, calculated so the loan is fully repaid at the end of the agreed tenure.
EMI equals P x r x (1+r) to the power n, divided by (1+r) to the power n minus 1, where P is the principal, r is the monthly interest rate and n is the number of months.
It lowers the monthly burden but increases the total interest substantially, because you are borrowing for longer. Pick the shortest tenure whose instalment you can comfortably afford.
This calculator uses reducing balance, which is how most home, car and personal loans work. A flat rate charges interest on the original principal throughout and works out considerably more expensive for the same headline number.
