Army Body Fat Calculator

US Army AR 600-9 tape test, with the age and sex limits.

Step one — the screening table

Under AR 600-9 the height and weight table comes first. Only soldiers above the screening weight are taped.

An unofficial preparation tool that implements the published AR 600-9 formula and tables. The tape method carries a three to four percent error, which is why the Army uses it as a compliance screen rather than a body composition measurement. An official result comes from a measurement conducted under the regulation.

Quick Tool Overview

The Army Body Fat Calculator runs the US Army tape test as AR 600-9 defines it: the height and weight screening table first, then the circumference formula, then a comparison against the maximum body fat allowed for your age group and sex.

About the Army Body Fat Calculator

Run the US Army tape test as AR 600-9 defines it. Height, neck and abdomen (waist and hips for women) produce a body fat percentage, which is then compared against the maximum allowed for your age and sex.

The regulation works in two stages, and the calculator follows both. Soldiers are first screened against a height and weight table; only those who exceed the screening weight are taped at all. The tape formula itself is the US Navy circumference method, so it inherits the same three to four percent error, which is precisely why it is used as a compliance screen rather than a body composition measurement. This is an unofficial calculator for preparation, not a record of an official test.

Key features of the Army Body Fat Calculator

Both stages of the regulation

The screening weight table is checked first, exactly as AR 600-9 requires, before any tape measurement is applied.

Age and sex brackets

The maximum allowable percentage rises with age, and the correct bracket for you is applied automatically.

The margin, not just the verdict

How far under or over the standard you are, and the weight change that would close the gap.

Correct measuring guidance

Where to place the tape and how to round, since measurement technique moves the result more than anything else.

Clearly unofficial

A preparation tool that implements the published formula — an official result comes from a measurement under the regulation.
