What the fees cost
The Mutual Fund Calculator projects a fund holding with regular contributions and applies the expense ratio and any sales load properly, showing the balance with and without fees so an abstract percentage becomes a number you can weigh.
Enter your initial investment, regular contributions, expected return and time horizon to project a mutual fund holding. The expense ratio and any front or back-end load are applied properly, so the result is what you would actually end up with.
Fees are the reason this calculator exists in its own right rather than as a generic growth projection. An expense ratio is charged on the whole balance every year, so it grows as your money does, and over decades a difference of one percent between two otherwise identical funds can consume a substantial fraction of the final value. The calculator shows the balance with and without fees side by side, which turns an abstract percentage into a number you can weigh.
One percent a year over thirty years can consume roughly a quarter of the final value, shown as a figure rather than a warning.
A five percent front load means only ninety-five percent of your money is ever invested, and that has to be earned back.
Charged annually on everything, so the fee grows as your money does — modelled correctly rather than as a flat deduction.
A lump sum plus monthly investing, which is how most people actually hold funds.
Two funds with different fees on the same assumptions, so the only difference is the one that matters.
The lump sum you start with and any regular monthly or annual contribution.
The gross annual return before fees, and the number of years you will hold.
The expense ratio, and any front-end or back-end sales load the fund charges.
The two balances side by side show exactly what the fees cost over your horizon.
The annual fee a fund charges as a percentage of assets, deducted from returns rather than billed. It applies to the whole balance every year, so its cost grows as your investment does.
Far more than the number implies, because the fee compounds against you. Over thirty years, one percent a year can consume roughly a quarter of what the investment would otherwise have been worth.
A commission charged on purchase, front-end, or on sale, back-end. A five percent front load means only ninety-five percent of your money is invested from day one, and it must be earned back before you break even.
Generally yes, often by a large multiple, because tracking an index requires no research team. Since fees are the one component of future returns you can know in advance, that difference is worth taking seriously.
