About the Tax Calculator

A general sales tax calculator that adds tax to a listed price or extracts it from a total. You can enter a single combined rate, or enter a state rate and a local or county rate separately and let the calculator add them for you.

This matters most in the United States, where prices are usually advertised before tax and the combined rate depends on the city as well as the state. Knowing the real checkout price ahead of time is the everyday use, and the reverse mode covers the opposite job: taking a receipt total and splitting it back into the pre-tax amount and the tax paid, which is what expense claims and bookkeeping entries need.

Key features of the Tax Calculator

State and local rates combined

Enter them separately and the calculator adds them, which matters where the combined rate depends on the city as well as the state.

Know the checkout price first

US prices are advertised before tax, so this is the everyday use — finding what you will actually pay.

Reverse mode for receipts

Split a receipt total back into the pre-tax amount and the tax paid, which is what expense claims need.

Any rate

Works for any sales tax, use tax or local levy — the arithmetic does not care what it is called.

Rounded to currency

Results are presented to two decimal places so they match what a till would print.

How to use the Tax Calculator

  1. 1

    Enter the price

Type the listed price, or the total from a receipt if you are working backwards.

  2. 2

    Set the tax rate

Enter one combined rate, or a state and local rate separately to have them totalled.

  3. 3

    Choose the direction

Add tax to a pre-tax price, or remove tax from a tax-inclusive total.

Frequently asked questions

Divide the total by one plus the tax rate. A receipt of 107.50 at an 7.5 percent rate has a pre-tax price of 100 and tax of 7.50.
