Outliers by the 1.5 × IQR rule
When the mean sits well away from the median, the data is skewed by extreme values — which is exactly why median income is the figure that gets reported rather than average income. Outliers are flagged by the standard convention and are worth investigating rather than automatically deleting.
The Mean, Median, Mode, Range Calculator takes a pasted dataset and returns every standard summary statistic at once — centre, spread, quartiles, outliers and skew — because the interesting information is usually in where these measures disagree.
Paste or type a list of numbers and get every standard summary statistic at once: mean, median, mode and range, plus quartiles, interquartile range, variance, standard deviation and the outliers the data contains.
Showing them together is deliberate, because the interesting information is usually in the disagreement. When the mean sits well above the median, the data is skewed by a few large values — which is exactly why average income is a misleading figure and median income is the one that gets reported. The tool flags skew, identifies outliers by the standard 1.5 × IQR rule, and sorts the data so you can see the shape rather than only the summary.
Mean, median, mode, range, variance, standard deviation, quartiles and IQR without switching tools.
When the mean sits well away from the median, the tool says so — the reason median income is the figure that gets reported.
Values beyond 1.5 × IQR from the quartiles are listed, using the standard convention.
Ties for the most frequent value are all reported, and a dataset with no mode is said to have none.
Line breaks, commas and spaces are all accepted as separators.
Separated by commas, spaces or new lines. Paste straight from a spreadsheet column.
Mean, median and mode, with a note when they disagree meaningfully.
Range, quartiles, interquartile range, variance and standard deviation.
Values more than 1.5 interquartile ranges beyond the quartiles are listed.
The mean is the total divided by the count; the median is the middle value when sorted. The median is unaffected by extreme values, which is why it is used for income and house prices.
If every value appears once, the dataset has no mode. If several values tie for the highest frequency, it is multimodal and all of them are reported.
The median splits the data in half; Q1 is the median of the lower half and Q3 the median of the upper half. The interquartile range is Q3 minus Q1.
The standard rule flags any value below Q1 − 1.5 × IQR or above Q3 + 1.5 × IQR. It is a convention rather than a law, and outliers are worth investigating rather than automatically deleting.
