The Take-Home-Paycheck Calculator shows what actually reaches your account each pay period, itemising federal tax, Social Security, Medicare, retirement contributions and insurance — and what each pre-tax deduction really costs you in take-home pay.
Enter your gross salary, your filing status and your pre-tax deductions to get the amount that actually reaches your account each pay period. The breakdown separates federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, retirement contributions and insurance premiums.
The gap between gross and net surprises people, and pre-tax deductions are the reason it is smaller than it looks. A dollar into a traditional retirement plan or a health savings account reduces taxable income, so it costs less than a dollar of take-home pay — often noticeably less at higher marginal rates. The calculator shows the real cost of each pre-tax contribution, which is the figure to use when deciding how much to put away rather than the nominal amount.
Federal tax, Social Security, Medicare, insurance and retirement, each on its own line.
A hundred dollars into a 401k costs about seventy-eight in take-home at a 22 percent rate — the figure to plan with.
Weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly or monthly, with per-period figures rather than annual ones.
Roth and traditional contributions behave differently, and the calculator keeps them distinct.
An approximate state rate field, flagged as an estimate since state systems vary widely.
Annual salary or per-period gross, and how often you are paid.
Single, married filing jointly or head of household, plus any dependents.
Retirement contributions, health insurance premiums and any HSA or FSA amounts.
The take-home figure per period, with every deduction itemised above it.
Federal income tax, Social Security at 6.2 percent, Medicare at 1.45 percent, state and local tax where applicable, plus insurance and retirement deductions. Together these commonly remove a quarter to a third of gross pay.
Pre-tax deductions come out before income tax is calculated, so they reduce your taxable income and cost less than their face value. Post-tax deductions, such as Roth contributions, come out after and cost the full amount.
Less than the amount contributed, because it lowers taxable income. At a 22 percent marginal rate, a hundred dollar contribution reduces take-home pay by about seventy-eight dollars.
There is a field for a state rate, but state systems vary enormously in brackets, deductions and local add-ons. Treat the state portion as an approximation and check your own state rules for anything precise.
