Mass Calculator

Mass from density and volume, force, or weight on any planet.

What this mass weighs elsewhere

Mass never changes. Weight does — this is the clearest demonstration of the difference.

Weight on Earth in newtons

Mass is how much matter something contains and never changes. Weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass, so it varies with location. A kilogram is strictly a unit of mass; the correct unit of weight is the newton.

Quick Tool Overview

The Mass Calculator finds mass three ways — from density and volume, from force and acceleration, or from weight under a given gravity — and shows what that mass would weigh across the solar system, which makes the mass-versus-weight distinction concrete.

About the Mass Calculator

Find mass three different ways: from density and volume, from force and acceleration using Newton's second law, or from a measured weight under a given gravitational acceleration.

The third route exists because mass and weight are routinely confused, and the distinction is genuinely important. Mass is how much matter something contains and does not change; weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass, so it changes with where you are. A 70 kg person has a mass of 70 kg everywhere, but weighs about 686 newtons on Earth and roughly a sixth of that on the Moon. The calculator shows what a given mass would weigh across the solar system.

Key features of the Mass Calculator

Three routes to mass

From density and volume, from F = ma, or from a measured weight and local gravity.

Mass versus weight explained

Mass never changes; weight does. The page makes the distinction rather than assuming it.

Planetary weight table

What the same mass weighs on each planet, which is the clearest demonstration of the difference.

Full unit coverage

Kilograms, grams, pounds, ounces, stones and tonnes, all at once.

Newtons handled properly

Weight in newtons is treated as a force, not silently as a mass.

How to use the Mass Calculator

  1. 1

    Choose a method

From density and volume, from force and acceleration, or from weight and gravity.

  2. 2

    Enter your values

Units can be mixed freely — conversion is handled for you.

  3. 3

    Read the mass

In kilograms, grams, pounds and other units at once.

  4. 4

    See the planetary table

What that mass would weigh on each planet, which makes the mass-weight distinction concrete.

Frequently asked questions

Mass is the amount of matter in an object and never changes. Weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass, so it varies with location — the same object weighs less on the Moon.
