Why hex?

One hex digit is exactly four binary bits, so conversion is a straight substitution. A byte is always two hex digits, which is why memory addresses and colour codes are written this way.

Quick Tool Overview

The Hex Calculator performs arithmetic directly in hexadecimal with decimal and binary equivalents shown next to every operand and result. It also breaks a hex value into its bytes and, for six-digit values, reads it as an RGB colour with a live swatch.

About the Hex Calculator

Perform arithmetic directly in hexadecimal, with the decimal and binary equivalents shown next to every operand and result. Hex digits run 0 to 9 then A to F, so F is 15 and 10 in hex is 16 in decimal.

Hexadecimal exists because it maps cleanly onto binary: each hex digit is exactly four bits, so a byte is always two hex digits and a 32-bit value is always eight. That is why memory addresses, colour codes and file signatures are written this way. The page also breaks a hex value into its bytes and, for six-digit values, reads it as an RGB colour with a live swatch.

Key features of the Hex Calculator

Arithmetic without conversion

Work in hex directly instead of converting to decimal, calculating, and converting back.

Decimal and binary alongside

Every value carries both equivalents, which is how you catch a slip immediately.

Byte breakdown

Each hex digit is exactly four bits, so a byte is two digits and a 32-bit value is eight — the split is shown for you.

Colour preview

Six-digit values are read as an RGB colour with a live swatch, since that is half of what hex is used for.

Case-insensitive input

Type F or f — both are accepted, with the output in whichever case you prefer.

How to use the Hex Calculator

  1. 1

    Enter hex values

Type using 0-9 and A-F. A leading 0x is accepted and ignored.

  2. 2

    Pick an operation

Add, subtract, multiply or divide, and the result is shown in hex, decimal and binary.

  3. 3

    Check the byte breakdown

Values are split into bytes, and six-digit values are also previewed as an RGB colour.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply each digit by its place value, a power of 16, and add them. Hex 1A is 1 x 16 plus 10, which is 26 in decimal.
