Where your chosen share sits against guidance
Guidance generally puts fat at 20 to 35 percent of daily calories, caps saturated fat at about 10 percent, and heart-health advice at 6 percent. Below roughly 15 to 20 percent of calories, absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins and hormone production can suffer. Not medical advice.
The Fat Intake Calculator turns a calorie target into daily fat grams, along with the saturated fat ceiling that guidance sets and a minimum you should not drop below. Fat carries nine calories per gram, so small changes move the total faster than with the other macros.
Work out how many grams of fat to eat each day for your calorie target, along with the saturated fat ceiling that goes with it and the minimum you should not drop below. Fat carries nine calories per gram, so small changes move the total quickly.
Dietary fat does more than supply energy. It carries the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, supplies the essential fatty acids the body cannot make, and underpins hormone production, which is why very low fat diets tend to cause problems that very low carbohydrate diets do not. The calculator therefore protects a floor of roughly 20 percent of calories before it reports a range, and separates the saturated portion, which is the part guidance actually caps.
Guidance limits saturated fat to about 10 percent of calories, and heart-health advice to 6 percent — both are shown in grams.
A floor near 20 percent of calories is enforced, because very low fat intakes impair vitamin absorption and hormone production.
From the 20 percent floor up to ketogenic shares, so you can see what each choice costs the other macros.
Cooking oils, butter and nuts are listed with their fat per serving, since they use the allowance faster than people expect.
Change any input and every figure updates as you type.
Give a calorie target directly, or have maintenance estimated from age, sex, height, weight and activity.
Anywhere from a 20 percent floor up to a high-fat or ketogenic share of calories.
Total fat per day, the saturated fat limit, and a minimum you should stay above.
Check the food reference to see how quickly cooking oils and spreads use the allowance.
Guidance generally puts fat at 20 to 35 percent of daily calories, which is roughly 44 to 78 grams on a 2,000 calorie diet. Ketogenic diets deliberately run far higher.
Most guidelines cap saturated fat at about 10 percent of calories, and heart-health advice often at 6 percent. On 2,000 calories that is roughly 22 and 13 grams respectively.
Below about 15 to 20 percent of calories, absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and hormone production can suffer. Very low fat diets exist clinically but are not a sensible default.
Not by itself. Fat is calorie-dense, so it is easy to overeat, but weight gain still follows total energy intake rather than any one macronutrient.
