About the Cooking Measurement Converter

A recipe from America measures in cups and spoons, one from Britain or Europe weighs in grams, and an Australian tablespoon is not the same size as an American one. Converting between spoons and millilitres is simple arithmetic, but converting cups to grams depends on what is in the cup.

This converter does both. Choose any volume or weight unit on each side and, when the conversion crosses from volume to weight, pick the ingredient — flour, sugar, butter, rice, honey and 35 more, each with its own density. Fractions are typed the way recipes write them, results come back as kitchen fractions such as 2/3 cup, and the whole amount is laid out in every volume and weight unit at once.

Key features of the Cooking Measurement Converter

Real ingredient densities

Forty ingredients each carry their own grams per cup, so flour, sugar and honey convert correctly.

Recipe-style fractions

Type 1 1/2 or ¾ and get answers back as fractions a cook can measure.

Every cup and spoon

US, metric, UK imperial and Australian cups and tablespoons are all listed separately.

Full measure table

The amount is laid out in every volume and every weight unit at once.

Honest about scooping

A warning explains how packing flour changes its weight, so you know when to weigh instead.

How to use the Cooking Measurement Converter

  1. 1

    Type the amount

    Use decimals or recipe fractions: 2, 0.75, 3/4, 1 1/2.

  2. 2

    Pick the units

Choose from cups, spoons, millilitres, fluid ounces, grams, ounces and more.

  3. 3

    Choose the ingredient

Needed when converting between volume and weight, because a cup of flour and a cup of sugar weigh different amounts.

  4. 4

    Read every measure

The result is shown as a number and a kitchen fraction, with a full volume and weight table.

Frequently asked questions

About 125 g for all-purpose flour spooned into a US cup and levelled. Scooping straight from the bag packs it and can give 140 g or more.
