Quick Tool Overview

Compress Image to Size takes the target rather than the quality as its input. Type a size in KB or MB and a bisection search finds the best quality that still fits, usually within ten passes. Dimensions are left alone unless quality alone cannot reach the target, and the quality actually achieved is reported so you know what the limit cost.

About the Compress Image to Size

There are two ways to compress: choose a quality and accept the size, or choose a size and accept the quality. Most tools only do the first. This does the second.

Type the target and a bisection search finds the highest quality that still fits under it, usually within ten encoding passes. Dimensions are left alone unless quality alone cannot get there, in which case the picture is scaled down as well and the tool says so. It differs from Resize Image to KB in emphasis rather than mechanism: this page leads with the quality it achieved, which is what you care about when the limit is generous.

Key features of the Compress Image to Size

Bisection search

Converges on the best quality that fits in about ten encoding passes, rather than leaving you to guess.

Reports the quality reached

If the target forced quality down to 30, you are told, because that is a signal to change the target or the format.

Dimensions as a last resort

Pixels are only dropped when quality alone cannot reach the number, and the tool says when it has done so.

Never overshoots

Only a result at or under the target is accepted, so the download always passes the check it was made for.

JPEG or WebP

WebP reaches a given target at noticeably higher quality, when the destination will take it.

Frequently asked questions

By bisection: it encodes at full quality, then repeatedly halves the range between settings that fit and settings that do not, converging in about ten passes.
