About the JPG to PNG Converter

Converting to PNG does not recover detail a JPEG has already thrown away, and it is worth being clear about that. What it does give you is a lossless container: from that point on, every further edit and save is exact rather than compounding compression damage.

The other reason is transparency. A logo or a product shot photographed on a flat background can have that background made transparent while converting, using a colour match with an adjustable tolerance — enough for clean studio backgrounds, though a busy photograph needs the Background Remover instead. Expect the PNG to be larger than the JPEG it came from; that is the price of being lossless.
