The Character Counter with Spaces reports the total number of characters in your text with every space, tab and line break included — the figure that SMS segments, social posts, meta descriptions and form fields are actually measured against. The count updates as you type and the text never leaves your browser.
Almost every hard limit you are given counts spaces. An SMS segment is 160 characters with spaces, a meta description is measured in pixels but budgeted at about 160 characters with spaces, and database columns count the byte the space occupies just like any other. This counter gives you that figure and nothing else in the way.
The total updates on every keystroke and treats tabs and line breaks as characters too, because a form field that rejects your input at 500 characters is counting them. A second reading shows the count without spaces beside it, so you can see how much of your budget the whitespace is actually using before you start trimming words.
Spaces, tabs and line breaks are all real characters to the systems enforcing your limit, so all of them count here.
Set the limit you are writing to and see how many characters are left, or how far over you are, on every keystroke.
The count without spaces is shown alongside, so you can see how much of your budget whitespace is using.
One click loads the limit for an SMS segment, a Google title, a meta description or an X post.
A tweet or a whole manuscript are counted the same way, with no upload and no character ceiling.
Type into the box or paste from any document. Nothing is uploaded — the count is worked out in your browser.
The headline figure is every character including spaces, tabs and line breaks.
Enter the limit you are writing to and the tool shows how many characters you have left or how far over you are.
Edit in place and watch the figure move. The count never lags behind what is in the box.
Yes. A line break is a real character in the underlying text, and systems that enforce a character limit count it, so this tool does too. The breakdown below the total shows how many of your characters are line breaks.
Yes. Every space is counted individually, so two spaces between sentences count as two characters. If you want them collapsed first, run the text through the Remove Extra Spaces tool.
It matches the "Characters (with spaces)" figure in the Word Count dialog of Microsoft Word and Google Docs. The one difference is that Word counts a paragraph mark as one character, which is what this tool does with a line break.
There is no limit set by the tool. Very large documents — hundreds of thousands of characters — are handled by your browser, so the only real ceiling is the memory of the device you are on.
