Look up definitions for common English words, offline.
A curated offline set of over two hundred common English words. Nothing you type here is transmitted.
Word Definition is a curated offline dictionary covering over two hundred of the most frequently looked-up English words, each with its part of speech, a plain definition, an example and related words. It says plainly when a word is outside the set rather than guessing.
This is a curated dictionary rather than a complete one, and that is a deliberate trade. Every other tool on this site runs entirely in your browser and sends nothing anywhere; a full dictionary would mean either a very large download or a lookup request for every word you searched.
What is here is over two hundred of the most frequently looked-up English words, with their part of speech, a plain definition, an example sentence and their common synonyms. That covers the great majority of everyday lookups. For a rare, technical or newly coined word it will find nothing, and it says so clearly rather than guessing — at which point a full dictionary is the right tool and this page tells you so.
The trade for smaller coverage is that the word you look up goes nowhere.
"Running" finds "run" and "boxes" finds "box", so the base form does not have to be guessed.
A definition alone often does not settle usage; an example usually does.
Synonyms and antonyms alongside each entry, which is usually the next question anyway.
Rather than approximating a definition, which would be worse than nothing.
Any single English word.
Part of speech, definition, an example sentence and related words.
If the exact word is not found, its base form usually is — plurals and inflections are resolved automatically.
The page says plainly when a word is outside the curated set.
Over two hundred of the most frequently looked-up English words — the core vocabulary a thesaurus and a quick definition check are actually used for. Specialist, rare and very new words are outside it.
Because it would send every word you look up to a third party, and this site does not do that. A curated offline set is the honest trade: smaller coverage, complete privacy.
Yes. Regular plurals, past tenses and -ing forms are reduced to their base form before lookup, so "running" finds "run" and "boxes" finds "box".
The page says so plainly rather than guessing at a definition. For anything specialist, a full dictionary is genuinely the better tool and there is no point pretending otherwise.
