The Special Character Counter finds every character in your text that is not a letter, a digit or a plain space, and lists each one with its count, Unicode code point and name. Invisible characters — zero-width spaces, non-breaking spaces, byte order marks — are flagged explicitly, because those are the ones you cannot find by reading.
Special characters are where imports break. A curly quote copied from Word, a non-breaking space from a web page, a zero-width joiner riding along inside an emoji — none of them are visible, and all of them can fail a validation rule that only expected letters and digits.
This counter finds every character that is not a letter, a digit or an ordinary space, counts how many there are, and lists each distinct one with its Unicode code point and name. Invisible and control characters are called out explicitly, because those are the ones you cannot find by reading the text. It is the tool to reach for when a field is rejecting input that looks perfectly clean on screen.
Zero-width spaces, non-breaking spaces and byte order marks are named rather than shown, since showing them would show nothing.
Every distinct symbol comes with its U+ code point, which is what you need to search for or strip it in code.
Punctuation, currency, mathematical symbols, emoji and control characters are separated, so the problem class is obvious.
Each character is reported with where it first appears, so you can find it in the original rather than hunting.
Whatever it finds can be stripped with Remove Special Characters or normalised with Clean Text.
The value that a form, import or API is rejecting.
The total number of special characters, with the number of distinct ones beside it.
Each distinct symbol is listed with its count, its Unicode code point and its name.
Zero-width and control characters are flagged in red, since they are the cause you cannot see.
Anything that is not a letter, a digit or a plain space. That includes punctuation, mathematical symbols, currency signs, emoji, and the invisible formatting characters that cause most import failures.
Paste the text here and look at the flagged rows. Zero-width spaces (U+200B), zero-width joiners (U+200D), non-breaking spaces (U+00A0) and byte order marks (U+FEFF) are each named rather than shown, because showing them would be showing nothing.
Almost always because it was copied from somewhere that added it. Word turns straight quotes into curly ones, web pages use non-breaking spaces for layout, and PDFs insert soft hyphens at line breaks.
The Remove Special Characters tool strips them, and the Clean Text tool replaces the common ones with their plain equivalents — curly quotes become straight, non-breaking spaces become ordinary ones.
