About the Add Line Numbers

Numbered lines make a document referenceable. You cannot say "the problem is on line 42" about a block of text that has no line numbers, which is why code review, legal drafts, transcripts and checklists all want them.

This numbers every line with the details that matter for the result being usable. Numbers can be zero-padded so they align in a monospaced font, which stops the text ragging as the count crosses from single to double digits. The starting number can be anything, so a section continues from where the previous one ended. Blank lines can be skipped or counted. And the separator between the number and the line is yours, whether that is a full stop, a colon, a pipe or a tab for pasting into a spreadsheet.

Key features of the Add Line Numbers

Zero padding for alignment

Line 9 and line 10 start their text at the same column, so a long block does not look ragged.

Any start and step

Continue a numbering across two sections, or count in fives or tens.

Blank lines counted or skipped

Match a code editor's line numbers, or number the items rather than the rows.

Strips existing numbers

Renumbering a already-numbered block does not double up the digits.

Any separator

A full stop, colon, pipe or a tab — the tab being what you want when it is going into a spreadsheet.

Frequently asked questions

Alignment. Without padding, line 9 and line 10 start their text at different columns, which makes a long numbered block look ragged. Padding to a fixed width keeps every line starting at the same place.
