Strip symbols and invisible characters, keeping letters and numbers.
Characters removed
None.
Remove Special Characters strips everything that is not a letter, a digit or a space — including the invisible characters that make a perfectly ordinary-looking value fail validation. What counts as removable is adjustable, right down to plain ASCII for genuinely old systems.
A field that rejects perfectly ordinary-looking text is nearly always rejecting something invisible. A zero-width joiner riding inside an emoji, a byte order mark at the front of a CSV, a soft hyphen from a PDF — none of these are visible, and all of them will fail a validation rule that expected letters and digits.
This tool strips everything that is not a letter, a digit or a space, including the characters you cannot see. What counts as removable is adjustable: keep basic punctuation so the text still reads, keep accented letters so names survive, or go all the way down to plain ASCII when the receiving system is genuinely that old. A count of what was removed is shown, so you can tell whether the invisible character you suspected was actually there.
Zero-width joiners, byte order marks and soft hyphens are removed — the characters causing the failure you cannot see.
Full stops, commas, apostrophes and hyphens can be preserved so the text is still readable prose.
Names survive, because removing é from a surname is a data error rather than a clean-up.
One switch strips everything above code point 127, which is what genuinely old systems require.
Each removed character is shown with its code point, so you learn what was hiding in the value.
The value that a form, an import or an API keeps rejecting.
Basic punctuation, accented letters and spaces can each be preserved or removed.
One switch strips everything outside the ASCII range, which is what genuinely old systems require.
The removed characters are listed with their code points, so you can see exactly what was hiding in there.
Anything that is not a letter, a digit or a space. That includes punctuation, currency and mathematical symbols, emoji, and the invisible formatting characters that cause most import failures.
Not by default — they are letters, and removing them mangles names. Switch on ASCII-only mode if the receiving system truly cannot handle them, and consider Remove Accents instead, which converts é to e rather than deleting it.
Yes, along with the invisible joiner characters that hold multi-part emoji together. Those joiners are a common cause of a string that looks shorter than the system says it is.
Keep basic punctuation on. Full stops, commas, apostrophes and hyphens are preserved while the exotic symbols go, which leaves text a person can still read.
