About the Braille to Text Converter

Braille written in Unicode turns up in accessibility testing, in teaching material, in a file from a refreshable display, or simply pasted into a message. Reading ⠠⠓⠑⠇⠇⠕ by eye takes practice most sighted people do not have.

Paste the cells and get the text. Capital signs, capital word signs, the number sign and the letter sign are all understood, so ⠼⠁⠃ reads as 12 and ⠠⠓⠊ as Hi. Common punctuation, including the two-cell brackets and quotation marks, is decoded as well. Grade 2 contractions — a single cell standing for a whole word — are not guessed at: anything unrecognised is listed instead, because inventing a word is worse than saying you do not know.

Key features of the Braille to Text Converter

Signs understood

Capital, capital-word, number and letter signs all read correctly.

Punctuation decoded

Two-cell marks are matched before single cells, so brackets survive.

Grade 2 cells are listed, never guessed into words.

Round-trips

Text converted to braille and back comes out the same.

Tells you what is missing

Says plainly when the input is not Unicode braille at all.
