Waist-to-hip ratio against WHO thresholds

Shape categories are a styling classification, not a health measure — ratios are unitless, so centimetres and inches give identical results. Waist-to-hip ratio is the one figure here with real health evidence: the WHO treats above 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women as raised metabolic risk, independent of overall weight.

Quick Tool Overview

The Body Type Calculator classifies your body shape from bust, waist and hip measurements using the ratio thresholds the standard categories are defined by. It also reports waist-to-hip ratio separately, which is the part of the calculation with health evidence behind it.

About the Body Type Calculator

Classify your body shape from three measurements — bust, waist and hips — using the ratio thresholds that the standard shape categories are actually defined by. Hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle and inverted triangle are all determined arithmetically rather than by eye.

Body shape is mostly a styling concept, and the calculator treats it as one: knowing which of your measurements dominates is genuinely useful for choosing clothes that fit without alteration. One number here does carry health meaning, though, and it is shown separately: waist-to-hip ratio is an established predictor of cardiometabolic risk, independent of BMI, because it reflects where fat is stored rather than how much of it there is.

Key features of the Body Type Calculator

Ratios, not guesswork

Hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle and inverted triangle are each defined by explicit thresholds, which the tool shows.

Waist-to-hip ratio separated out

The one number here with real health evidence is reported on its own, with the WHO risk thresholds.

Measuring guidance

Where to place the tape for each measurement, since inconsistent technique changes the category.

Styling notes per shape

What each category means in practice for fit and proportion, rather than just a label.

Units do not matter

Ratios are unitless, so centimetres and inches give identical results.

How to use the Body Type Calculator

  1. 1

    Take three measurements

Bust at the fullest point, waist at the narrowest, hips at the widest. Keep the tape level and snug.

  2. 2

    Enter them

In centimetres or inches — the ratios are the same either way.

  3. 3

    Read your shape

The matched category, with the ratio thresholds that produced it shown explicitly.

  4. 4

    Check the health ratio

Waist-to-hip ratio is reported separately, with the risk thresholds for each sex.

Frequently asked questions

By comparing bust, waist and hip measurements as ratios. An hourglass, for example, needs bust and hips within about five percent of each other and a waist at least 25 percent smaller.
