About the Antonym Finder

Opposites are less straightforward than they look, and the differences matter when you are choosing a word. "Hot" and "cold" are gradable opposites with a whole range between them. "Alive" and "dead" are complementary — there is no middle. "Buy" and "sell" are converses, the same event seen from two sides.

This finds antonyms for over two hundred common English words and names which kind of opposition each one is, because that determines whether a sentence like "not hot" means "cold". Where a word has several senses, the antonyms are grouped by sense — the opposite of "light" is "heavy" or "dark" depending entirely on which meaning you had. It is a curated offline set, so it covers common vocabulary and says so when a word is outside it.

Key features of the Antonym Finder

Gradable, complementary or converse — which changes what a negation actually implies.

Honest about coverage

Most nouns have no opposite at all, and the page explains why rather than inventing one.

Entirely offline

The set is bundled with the page, so lookups send nothing anywhere.
