Wrap Text

Hard-wrap text to a column width, with prefixes and hanging indents.

Quick Tool Overview

Wrap Text hard-wraps a block to a column width, breaking at spaces so no word is split. Every wrapped line can carry a prefix — "> " for an email quote, "// " for a code comment — and a hanging indent puts the first line at the margin with the rest indented.

About the Wrap Text

Hard wrapping inserts real line breaks so text keeps its shape wherever it goes, which is what plain-text email, code comments, commit messages and configuration files all need. Soft wrapping — what your editor does visually — disappears the moment the text moves.

This wraps at the width you choose, breaking at spaces so no word is split. What makes it more than a line-break inserter is the prefix support: every wrapped line can carry a prefix, so a block becomes an email quote with "> " on each line, or a code comment with "// " or " * ". A hanging indent puts the first line at the margin and indents the rest, which is how a bibliography entry or a definition list is set.

Key features of the Wrap Text

Prefixes counted in the width

A quoted reply stays inside the margin instead of overflowing by the length of the "> " on every line.

Hanging indents

First line at the margin, continuations indented — how bibliography entries and definition lists are set.

Words never split

Breaking happens at spaces, and a long URL is allowed to overflow rather than being made unusable.

Paragraph breaks kept

Blank lines survive the wrap, so the structure of the document is not flattened.

Standard widths built in

Seventy-two for email and eighty for code are one click.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The text is wrapped so that the prefix plus the content fits within the width, which is what makes a quoted email reply stay inside the margin rather than overflowing by two characters on every line.
