Quick Tool Overview

About the Clean Text

Text copied out of a PDF, an email or a web page arrives carrying every artefact of where it has been: curly quotes that break code, non-breaking spaces that fail validation, a hard line break at the end of every visual line, double spaces after full stops and a byte order mark at the front. Fixing them one tool at a time takes five passes.

This does all of it at once. Smart quotes and dashes become their plain equivalents, every kind of Unicode space becomes an ordinary space, invisible characters are removed, broken lines are rejoined into paragraphs, repeated spaces are collapsed and line ends are trimmed. Each fix is a switch, so you can leave out the ones you do not want, and a summary shows exactly what was changed rather than leaving you to spot it.

Key features of the Clean Text

Smart quotes flattened

Curly quotes and apostrophes become straight ones, which is what code, CSV files and search matching require.

Broken lines rejoined

The hard break at the end of every visual line in a PDF is removed while blank lines stay as paragraph breaks.

Invisible characters removed

Zero-width spaces, byte order marks, soft hyphens and directional marks all go in the same pass.

Every fix is optional

Switch off line rejoining for code, or keep smart quotes for prose — the tool never insists.

Change summary

Each category of fix is counted, so you can see what was wrong rather than having to spot it yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Curly quotation marks and apostrophes that word processors substitute automatically. They look better in prose but break code, CSV files and search matching, because they are different characters from the straight ones.
