About the URL to Text

A tracked URL is a hundred characters of escapes hiding about six words of meaning. Working out what a link actually points at — and what it is carrying — means decoding it, splitting it and reading the parameters, which is three operations by hand.

This does all three. The path becomes a readable breadcrumb, with each segment decoded and unslugified. The final segment becomes the likely page title. Every query parameter is listed with its decoded value, and the recognised tracking parameters — utm_source, fbclid, gclid and their relatives — are labelled with what they are for, which is usually the most revealing part of a shared link.

Tags added to a link so an analytics tool can attribute the visit — utm_source names where it came from, utm_medium the channel, utm_campaign the campaign. They carry no meaning for the page itself and can always be removed.
