Center Text

Centre every line within a width using real spaces.

Quick Tool Overview

Center Text pads each line with leading spaces so it sits in the middle of the width you set — the way a banner, a README title or an email signature is centred when there is no formatting available. Blank lines stay genuinely blank.

About the Center Text

Centring plain text is how you make a banner, a heading in a README, a title block in a code comment or the middle of an email signature. There is no formatting to lean on, so the centring has to be made of spaces.

Set the width and every line is padded with enough leading spaces to sit in the middle of it. Blank lines stay blank rather than becoming a run of spaces, which matters because trailing whitespace on an otherwise empty line is the kind of thing that shows up in a diff. Lines longer than the width are reported rather than silently overflowing, and can be wrapped first so the whole block centres properly.

Key features of the Center Text

Real spaces, not formatting

The centring is built from characters, so it survives being pasted into a terminal or a plain-text email.

Blank lines stay blank

No run of spaces on an empty line, which is exactly the invisible whitespace a diff would flag.

Odd remainders handled

A line that cannot be perfectly centred puts the extra space on the side you choose.

Optional wrapping first

Lines longer than the width can be wrapped so the whole block centres cleanly rather than overflowing.

Width presets

Eighty for terminals and seventy-two for email are one click, since those are the conventions.

Frequently asked questions

Because a line with an odd number of leftover spaces cannot be perfectly centred. The extra space goes on the right by default, which is the convention; there is a switch to put it on the left instead.
