About the Torque Converter

Torque specifications arrive in whatever unit the manufacturer grew up with. A car workshop manual says pound-feet, a European bike part says newton metres, a small servo is rated in kilogram-force centimetres and a torque screwdriver in ounce-inches or pound-inches.

Enter the value and its unit and the converter gives you the unit you need, the one-unit factors in both directions, and the same torque in every other unit. Add an engine or motor speed and it also works out the power that torque delivers, in kilowatts, mechanical horsepower and metric PS — the relationship behind every dyno chart.

Key features of the Torque Converter

Automotive and hobby units

lb·ft and N·m for engines and wheel nuts, kgf·cm and oz·in for servos and small motors.

Power from torque

Enter rpm to get kilowatts, mechanical horsepower and metric PS from P = T × 2π × rpm ÷ 60.

Factors both ways

The one-unit factor is shown in each direction, which is what you need to check a spec sheet by hand.

Full unit table

Every torque unit is listed at once, with click-to-copy values.

Exact definitions

Imperial units are derived from the defined pound-force and inch, so conversions are exact rather than rounded.

How to use the Torque Converter

  1. 1

    Enter the torque

Type the value from the spec sheet or wrench setting.

  2. 2

    Choose the units

Pick the unit you have and the unit you need, or tap a preset such as lb·ft to N·m.

  3. 3

Add a speed if you want power

Enter rpm to see the power that torque produces at that speed.

  4. 4

    Copy any value

The table below lists every unit; click a value to copy it.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply by 1.3558179483. So 100 lb·ft is 135.58 N·m. Going the other way, divide newton metres by the same number.
