Read on your device — the icon is never uploaded
The ICO to PNG Converter opens a Windows icon, lists every size stored inside it, and saves any of them as a PNG with its transparency intact — including old bitmap icons with a separate 1-bit mask.
An .ico file is not one image — it is a small archive holding the same icon at several sizes, 16, 32, 48 and often 256 pixels, so Windows can pick the right one. Browsers will not open it, image editors often show only one size, and design tools ignore it entirely.
Drop the icon here and every image inside is listed and previewed at once. Pick a size and download it as a PNG, optionally scaled up for a slide or a mockup. Modern icons store each size as a PNG already, and those are extracted byte for byte rather than re-encoded; older ones are Windows bitmaps with a separate 1-bit transparency mask, which is decoded and applied so the edges come out transparent rather than black. Cursor files (.cur) are read the same way.
All the images inside the icon are shown side by side.
A PNG entry comes out bit for bit as it was stored.
The separate 1-bit mask is applied, so edges are transparent rather than black.
Save at 2×, 4× or a fixed width for slides and mockups.
.cur files have the same structure and are read the same way.
Or a .cur cursor file — both are read the same way.
Every size in the icon is previewed underneath.
And scale it up if you want a larger PNG.
Transparency intact, ready for any editor.
Because Windows picks the size it needs: 16 pixels in a file list, 32 on the desktop, 256 in large-icon view. One .ico holds them all.
No. Where the entry is already a PNG it is extracted unchanged. Bitmap entries are decoded exactly, then written as PNG, which is lossless.
Because its transparency is a separate 1-bit mask, which most simple viewers ignore. That mask is read and applied here, so the edges come out transparent.
Yes. A .cur has the same structure as an .ico, so its image converts — though the hotspot, the pixel that clicks, has no equivalent in a PNG.
