About the Gregorian to Hijri Converter

The Hijri calendar is lunar: its twelve months follow the moon, so a year is about eleven days shorter than a Gregorian one and every Islamic date moves through the seasons. That is why Ramadan comes earlier each year, and why converting between the two calendars cannot be done with a fixed offset.

Pick a date and the converter gives the Hijri date with the month named in English, Arabic and Bangla, using the Umm al-Qura calendar Saudi Arabia uses officially — or an astronomical or tabular variant. Because many countries begin months on local moon sighting, an adjustment of a day or two is built in; Bangladesh, India and Pakistan are often a day behind. The whole Hijri month is laid out beside its Gregorian dates.
