Measuring your foot

  • Stand on a sheet of paper against a wall, with your heel touching it.
  • Mark the tip of your longest toe — which is not always the big toe.
  • Measure from the wall to the mark, in centimetres.
  • Measure both feet and use the longer one. Do it in the evening, when feet are largest.

Why the systems disagree

Each uses a different starting point and increment. UK sizes run about one and a half smaller than US men's. EU sizes use the Paris point, two thirds of a centimetre, which does not divide evenly into half sizes. Japanese sizing is simply the foot length in centimetres, which makes it the most straightforward of the four — and the reason measuring is more reliable than converting.

Last shape, width and construction vary between brands and styles, so conversion gives a starting point rather than a guarantee. Allow about a centimetre of room beyond your longest toe for walking shoes, and more for running.

About the Shoe Size Conversion

Convert a shoe size between US, UK, European, Japanese and centimetre systems, for men, women and children. Foot length is used as the common reference, so you can also start from a measurement rather than from a size you already own.

Starting from the measurement is generally the better approach, because the systems do not align neatly. Each one uses a different starting point and increment — the UK and US scales differ by roughly a size and a half, and men's and women's scales differ again — so conversion charts disagree in the details. Japanese sizing is simply the foot length in centimetres, which makes it the most straightforward system of the four.
