Quick Tool Overview

Pixelate Image averages each block of pixels down to a single colour, which unlike a light blur discards the information outright. Drag over a face, a name or a plate and set the block size — and the tool warns when the blocks are small relative to what you are hiding, because that mistake is common and consequential.

About the Pixelate Image

Pixelation replaces each block of pixels with their average colour. Unlike a light blur it discards information outright, which makes it the more honest choice when something genuinely needs hiding.

Drag a box over a face, a name, an address or a licence plate and set the block size. The rule of thumb worth knowing is that the block has to be larger than the feature being hidden: pixelating text at 4 pixels leaves enough structure for the words to be recovered, while pixelating the same text at 20 does not. The tool warns when the block size is small relative to the region, because that mistake is common and consequential.

Key features of the Pixelate Image

Genuinely destructive

Averaging discards the detail rather than transforming it, which is why large blocks are safer than a blur.

Region or whole image

Drag a box over one area, or pixelate everything for a mosaic effect.

Warns about weak settings

Small blocks over text leave enough structure to reconstruct, and the page says so rather than letting you assume otherwise.

Block size in real pixels

The setting is the actual block size in the output, not a vague strength slider.

Nothing uploaded

The whole point is hiding something private, so sending the file to a server would defeat it.

How to use the Pixelate Image

  1. 1

    Load the image

A photo or a screenshot with something to hide.

  2. 2

    Drag over the area

Or switch to whole-image mode for a mosaic effect.

  3. 3

    Set a large enough block

Bigger than the feature you are hiding. For text, much bigger.

  4. 4

    Download

The pixels are averaged and gone — this cannot be undone from the output.

Frequently asked questions

At a large enough block size, yes — the information is genuinely averaged away. At small block sizes it is not: pixelated text has been reconstructed by matching candidate strings against the block pattern.
