Add or remove VAT at any European rate, with the reverse charge explained.
The Invoice VAT Calculator adds VAT to a net price or removes it from a gross one at every UK and EU rate, and explains the two zero cases that are not the same thing — zero-rated, where input tax is recoverable, and exempt, where it is not.
VAT is charged on the value added at each stage, which means a registered business charges it on sales, reclaims it on purchases, and pays the difference. What appears on an invoice is one step of that, and the arithmetic is simple as long as you keep straight which direction you are going in.
Adding VAT: multiply the net by the rate. Removing it: divide the gross by one plus the rate. The second is where every mistake happens, because multiplying a VAT-inclusive £120 by 20% gives £24 rather than the £20 it actually contains.
The calculator carries every standard and reduced rate currently in force across the UK and the EU, so you can pick a country rather than remember a number. It also explains the two cases where the rate is zero but the treatment is different: zero-rating, where the supply is taxable at 0% and input tax is recoverable, and exemption, where it is not — a distinction that decides whether a business can reclaim anything at all.

Divide by one plus the rate. At 20%, £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 net and £20 VAT. At 5%, divide by 1.05. Multiplying the gross by the rate is the standard error.
A zero-rated supply is taxable at 0%, so the supplier can still reclaim input tax. An exempt supply is outside the VAT system, so input tax relating to it cannot be reclaimed. The invoice looks similar; the consequences are not.
A mechanism where the customer accounts for the VAT instead of the supplier. It applies to most cross-border B2B services in the EU and to UK domestic construction services. The invoice shows no VAT and carries a statement saying so.
Twenty per cent standard, five per cent reduced for domestic fuel, children’s car seats and some energy-saving materials, and zero for most food, books, children’s clothes and public transport.
