Hours Calculator

Count the hours between a start and end time, breaks deducted.

Why decimal hours?

Pay is a rate multiplied by hours, which only works in decimal. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45 — a mistake that quietly costs money on timesheets.

About the Hours Calculator

Enter a start time and an end time to get the duration in hours and minutes and in decimal hours. A break field subtracts unpaid time, which is what turns a clock-in and clock-out pair into payable hours.

Overnight shifts are handled properly. If the end time is earlier than the start time the calculator assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds a day rather than returning a negative duration, so a 22:00 to 06:00 shift correctly reads as eight hours. Twelve and twenty-four hour input are both accepted, and the decimal output is the format payroll systems expect.

Key features of the Hours Calculator

A 22:00 to 06:00 shift correctly reads as eight hours instead of a negative number.

Break deduction

Unpaid time is subtracted, which is what turns clock-in and clock-out into payable hours.

Decimal output

The format payroll systems expect, given alongside the hours-and-minutes reading.

12 and 24 hour input

Enter times however your rota is written and the calculator reads both.

Instant totals

Frequently asked questions

If the end time is before the start time it assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds 24 hours, so 22:00 to 06:00 correctly returns eight hours rather than a negative number.
