About the Area Calculator

Work out the area of the shapes that actually come up: rectangle, square, triangle, circle, ellipse, trapezoid, parallelogram and regular polygon. Each one shows the formula it used alongside the answer.

A converter beneath handles the units, moving between square metres, square feet, square yards, acres and hectares. There is also a materials panel for the practical version of the question: given a room's area, how much flooring, paint or turf do you need, including a wastage allowance. An L-shaped room is handled by adding two rectangles, which is how most real rooms get measured.

Key features of the Area Calculator

Eight shapes

Rectangle, square, triangle, circle, ellipse, trapezoid, parallelogram and regular polygon, each with its formula.

Area unit converter

Square metres, square feet, square yards, acres and hectares in any direction.

Materials panel

Given a room's area, how much flooring, paint or turf you need — the practical version of the question.

Wastage allowance

Add a percentage for offcuts and mistakes, because ordering exactly the calculated area never works.

L-shaped rooms

Handled by adding two rectangles, which is how most real rooms actually get measured.

How to use the Area Calculator

  1. 1

    Pick a shape

Choose the shape you are measuring and the right input fields appear.

  2. 2

    Enter the dimensions

Type the measurements in any supported unit. The area is calculated as you type.

  3. 3

    Convert the units

The result is shown in several area units at once, from square metres to acres.

  4. 4

    Add a wastage allowance

For flooring or paint, add a percentage for offcuts and second coats.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply length by width for a rectangular room. For an L-shaped room, split it into two rectangles, work out each area and add them together.
