Background Remover

Cut a subject out of its background, in your browser.

A subject on a plain or evenly lit background · nothing is uploaded

Quick Tool Overview

The Background Remover does colour-based cut-out properly rather than segmentation badly. Sample the background, set a tolerance, and matching pixels become transparent — with edge feathering and a defringe pass that removes the colour halo around hair and soft edges. A brush fixes whatever the automatic pass gets wrong.

About the Background Remover

Background removal splits into two very different problems. A subject on a plain or studio background is a colour-matching job and can be done exactly, in the browser, in milliseconds. A subject in a busy photograph is a segmentation problem that needs a model.

This solves the first properly rather than the second badly. Sample the background colour, set a tolerance, and every matching pixel becomes transparent — with edge feathering to avoid a cut-with-scissors outline and a defringe pass that removes the halo of background colour that survives around hair and soft edges. A brush lets you erase or restore areas by hand, which is what turns a good automatic result into a usable one. Nothing is uploaded, which matters because product and portrait work is usually unreleased.

Key features of the Background Remover

Defringe pass

Pulls the background colour out of semi-transparent edge pixels, which is what removes the halo everyone else leaves behind.

Feathered edges

A soft transition rather than a hard cut, so the subject does not look scissored out.

Brush to fix it

Erase or restore areas by hand, which is what turns a good automatic result into a usable one.

Click to sample

The background colour is taken from the image itself rather than matched by eye in a picker.

Honest about its range

The page says plainly that a busy photographic background is a segmentation problem this does not solve.

How to use the Background Remover

  1. 1

    Load the image

A subject on a plain or evenly lit background works best.

  2. 2

    Click the background

Sampling the colour is far more accurate than matching it by eye.

  3. 3

    Raise the tolerance

Until the background goes and the subject stays. The mask is shown as you drag.

  4. 4

    Touch up and defringe

Brush back anything lost, then defringe to kill the colour halo around edges.

Frequently asked questions

No. It is colour matching with feathering and defringing, which is exact on plain backgrounds and honest about not handling busy ones. A model would need a large download and would still run slowly here.
