Hearing your own writing read aloud is the single most effective proofreading technique there is. Your eye skips over a missing word; your ear does not. It is also how you check whether a script actually sounds like speech rather than like writing.
This uses the speech synthesis built into your operating system, so the voices are the ones already installed on your device and no audio is generated on a server. Rate, pitch and volume are adjustable, every available voice is listed with its language, and the text is highlighted word by word as it is spoken. Long texts can be paused and resumed, which matters because browsers have a habit of cutting off very long utterances.
With its language and region, including any you have added through your system settings.

Not by this page. Speech synthesis happens through the browser's API, which on most platforms uses a local voice. A few cloud-backed voices exist on some systems, and those are marked in the voice list where the browser reports it.
Chrome has a long-standing bug that cuts synthesis off after roughly fifteen seconds. This tool splits long text into sentence-sized chunks and queues them, which works around it.
Because reading silently, your brain fills in what it expects to see. Hearing the words removes that shortcut, so missing words, repeated words and clumsy rhythm all become obvious.
