Strikethrough Text

Add a line through text that survives being pasted.

Screen readers ignore these marks and read the text as normal, so never let strikethrough be the only signal that something is cancelled.

The second line is monospaced, where the segments meet evenly.

Quick Tool Overview

Strikethrough Text uses Unicode combining marks so the line is part of the characters rather than formatting applied to them — which is why it survives being pasted anywhere. Three stroke variants are offered because they render differently across devices.

About the Strikethrough Text

Strikethrough is normally formatting, and formatting disappears the moment text is pasted into a field that does not support it. The Unicode approach survives, because the line is part of the characters rather than applied to them.

It works with combining marks: a zero-width character that draws a line through the character before it. Three variants are available — a long stroke, a short stroke and a slash — and they render slightly differently across devices, which is why all three are offered. The result pastes into any plain text field and keeps its line. It is worth knowing that screen readers ignore the marks entirely and read the text as though it were not struck through, so never use it as the only signal that something is cancelled.

Key features of the Strikethrough Text

Three stroke styles

Long, short and slash, since device fonts draw each of them differently.

Survives pasting

The line is part of the text, so it does not disappear the way formatting does.

Explains the uneven look

Why proportional fonts leave gaps in the line and monospaced ones do not.

Accessibility warning

Screen readers ignore the marks entirely, so never let strikethrough be the only signal.

Reversible

The marks strip cleanly, leaving the original text intact.

Frequently asked questions

A combining long stroke overlay (U+0336) is inserted after each character. It has no width of its own and draws a line through the character it attaches to, so the effect is part of the text rather than formatting applied to it.
