The Spell Checker works from a curated list of the mistakes English speakers genuinely make — around a hundred and sixty of them — plus rule-based checks for doubled letters and repeated words. That gives high precision with none of the false positives that make full dictionary checkers exhausting.
A full dictionary spell checker needs a dictionary — hundreds of thousands of words, plus every inflection, name and technical term — and one that runs entirely in your browser would be a large download that still flagged half your vocabulary as wrong.
So this works the other way round, and does it well. It checks against a curated list of the spelling mistakes English speakers genuinely make — around a hundred and sixty of them, from "recieve" and "seperate" to "definately" and "occurence" — plus rule-based checks for doubled letters, transposed characters and repeated words. Every flag comes with a correction. It will not tell you that an unusual word is unknown, and it will not produce the false positives that make full checkers exhausting. British and American variants are handled as a preference rather than an error.
It flags known mistakes, so it never marks your surname or a technical term as wrong.
Both are correct English, so the tool asks which variety rather than declaring one an error.
Every flag comes with the right spelling, applicable individually or all at once.
Doubled letters, transposed characters and repeated words are caught by rule rather than by list.
The page says plainly what it will miss, and what to use instead for those cases.
A draft, an email or a document to proofread.
British or American, so -ise and -ize are treated as a preference rather than a mistake.
Each mistake is shown in context with its correction.
Accept them individually or all at once.
Because a browser-based dictionary large enough to be useful would be a substantial download, and would still flag names, jargon and technical terms as errors. Checking known mistakes gives high precision with no false positives.
Unusual misspellings not on the list, and any real word used incorrectly — "form" for "from" is two correctly spelled words. For those, read it aloud or use the Grammar Checker, which catches common confusions.
As a preference you set. With British selected, "color" is flagged as American rather than wrong; with American selected, "colour" is. Both are correct English, and the tool says which variety it is judging by.
No — that is not accessible to a web page, only to the browser itself. This uses its own bundled list, which is why it works the same in every browser.
