The Saturation Adjuster includes vibrance, which is the control that stops boosted photographs producing orange faces. Vibrance raises muted colours hard and already-saturated ones barely at all, and protects the hue range skin occupies. Hue rotation is there too, for warming or cooling a whole image at once.
Saturation raises every colour equally, which is why a boosted photograph so often ends up with orange faces: skin is already the most saturated thing in most portraits.
Vibrance is the control that solves it. It raises muted colours a lot and already-saturated ones barely at all, and protects the hue range skin occupies, so a landscape gets its punch without the people in it turning to plastic. Both are here, along with a hue rotation for shifting the whole palette, and the histogram-free live preview makes the difference between them obvious within a couple of seconds of dragging.
Lifts the muted colours and leaves the strong ones alone, which is why landscapes gain punch without faces turning orange.
The hue range skin occupies is deliberately held back, so portraits survive a boost that would otherwise ruin them.
Shift the whole palette around the wheel — small amounts warm or cool an image, large amounts go deliberately unnatural.
Drag to zero for a quick monochrome, with the dedicated converter linked for a considered conversion.
The difference between saturation and vibrance is obvious within seconds of dragging both.
Landscapes and product shots are the usual candidates.
It lifts the flat colours and leaves the already-strong ones and skin alone.
Small amounts. Watch faces and red objects, which clip first.
Rotating the hue slightly can warm or cool a whole image at once.
Saturation raises every colour by the same amount. Vibrance raises muted colours much more than saturated ones and protects skin tones, so it is the safer control on anything with people in it.
Because skin is already near the top of its saturation range, so it clips before anything else does. Use vibrance instead, which deliberately leaves that hue range alone.
Yes — drag saturation to zero, which is a simple desaturation. For a considered black and white conversion with channel control, use the Grayscale Image Converter.
It shifts every colour around the colour wheel by the same angle. Small amounts warm or cool an image; large amounts produce deliberately unnatural palettes.
