PNG Compressor

Cut PNG file size by reducing the colour palette.

Screenshots, logos and flat graphics benefit most · photographs do not

Quick Tool Overview

The PNG Compressor makes a lossless format smaller the only way that works: by reducing how many distinct colours the image needs. Screenshots, logos and flat illustrations routinely drop 60 to 80 percent with no visible change, and optional dithering hides the banding that shows up in gradients at low colour counts. Transparency is preserved.

About the PNG Compressor

PNG is lossless, so there is no quality slider to turn — the way a PNG gets smaller is by needing fewer colours to describe.

Most PNGs are screenshots, logos, icons and flat illustrations that use a few dozen distinct colours but are stored as though they might use sixteen million. Reducing the palette with median-cut quantisation, and optionally dithering to hide the banding that follows, routinely takes 60 to 80 percent off with no visible change at all. Transparency survives, which is the usual reason the file is a PNG in the first place.

Key features of the PNG Compressor

Median-cut quantisation

The palette is chosen by splitting the colour cube where the image actually has variety, not by a fixed table.

Transparency preserved

The alpha channel survives quantisation, so cut-out logos and icons stay cut out.

Optional dithering

Scatters pixels between palette colours so gradients stay smooth at low counts, at a small cost in size.

Live colour-count preview

Banding appears in the preview before it appears in your download, so you can back off one step.

Honest about photographs

The page says plainly that photographs should go to JPEG or WebP instead of being quantised.
