Italic Text Generator

Italic text for fields with no formatting controls.

The italic lowercase h comes from U+210E, the Planck constant, because Unicode had already used that position and never encodes a character twice.

Quick Tool Overview

The Italic Text Generator produces Unicode Mathematical Italic characters in serif, sans-serif and bold italic. One quirk is worth knowing: the italic lowercase h is missing from the block because the Planck constant symbol already occupied that position.

About the Italic Text Generator

Italic serves a real purpose in writing — a title, an emphasis, a foreign phrase — and none of the places people write online offer it. The Unicode Mathematical Italic characters fill the gap, because they are already drawn slanted.

Serif italic, sans-serif italic and bold italic are all produced here, covering the full alphabet. There is one genuine oddity worth knowing about: the italic lowercase h is missing from the block, because that position was already occupied by the Planck constant symbol. Unicode does not encode a character twice, so the tool substitutes that symbol, which looks identical. As with all Unicode styling, search engines and screen readers cannot read it, so it belongs in bios rather than in content.

Says when to use real italic

In documents and on the web, semantic formatting is correct and this is not.

Frequently asked questions

Because the Planck constant symbol was already encoded at that position, and Unicode never encodes the same character twice. The italic block leaves a hole there, and the Planck symbol is used instead — it looks the same.
