About the Glassmorphism Generator

The frosted glass effect is a semi-transparent background, a backdrop-filter blur and a light border. Each part matters, and the preview here sits over a real image so you can see whether it actually works rather than judging it against a flat colour.

Two things decide whether it looks convincing. The border is the one people skip: a one-pixel white border at low opacity is what creates the edge a pane of glass has, and without it the panel looks like a tinted rectangle. The saturation boost is the other — real glass intensifies the colours behind it slightly, which backdrop-filter can reproduce with a saturate() alongside the blur. Both are exposed, with the -webkit- prefix included for Safari.

Key features of the Glassmorphism Generator

Previewed over a real image

A flat colour behind the panel hides whether the effect works. A photograph does not.

The border included

A faint light border is what creates the edge a pane of glass has, and it is the part people skip.

Saturation boost

Real glass intensifies the colours behind it slightly, which a saturate() alongside the blur reproduces.

Safari prefix included

Safari has supported backdrop-filter for years but only behind -webkit-, so omitting it silently disables the effect on iOS.

Honest about the cost

backdrop-filter blurs a live region every frame. One panel is fine; a dozen over a video is not, and the page says so.

How to use the Glassmorphism Generator

  1. 1

    Set the blur

How much the background is diffused behind the panel.

  2. 2

    Set the transparency

How much of the background colour shows through.

  3. 3

    Add the border

A faint light border is what makes it read as glass rather than as a tint.

  4. 4

    Copy the CSS

With the -webkit- prefix, which Safari still needs.

Frequently asked questions

Usually the background is opaque. backdrop-filter blurs what is behind the element, so the element needs a semi-transparent background for any of it to show through.
