About the MIME Type Lookup

Look up a file extension and get its MIME type, or search a MIME type and get the extensions that use it. The list covers the types that actually appear on the web: documents, images, audio, video, archives, fonts and the Office formats with their unreasonable names.

Each result comes with the Content-Type header written out, including the charset parameter where it matters. Getting this wrong has real consequences: a JavaScript file served as text/plain will not execute as a module, an SVG served as text/xml will not render in an img tag, and a font served with the wrong type is rejected outright. Types that are text are marked as such, since that decides whether the charset parameter belongs there at all.

Key features of the MIME Type Lookup

Both directions

Search an extension to find its type, or a type to find every extension that uses it.

Header written out

The complete Content-Type line, including the charset parameter for text types and correctly omitting it for binary ones.

Text or binary marked

Which decides whether a charset belongs there at all — a distinction that is easy to get wrong.

The awkward Office types

The unreasonably long openxmlformats types for docx, xlsx and pptx, in full and copyable.

Explains the consequences

Why a module served as text/plain will not execute and an SVG served as text/xml will not render.

How to use the MIME Type Lookup

  1. 1

    Search an extension

Type png, woff2 or docx — with or without the dot.

  2. 2

    Or search a type

Type application/json to find which extensions use it.

  3. 3

    Copy the header

The complete Content-Type line, with a charset where one belongs.

  4. 4

    Check whether it is text

Text types take a charset parameter; binary ones do not.

Frequently asked questions

Browsers refuse to do things. A module script served as text/plain will not execute, an SVG served as text/xml will not render in an img tag, and with nosniff set the browser will not guess on your behalf.
