Docker Compose Generator

Build a docker-compose.yml with databases, caches and health checks.

Services alongside it

Quick Tool Overview

The Docker Compose Generator wires your application to the databases and caches beside it, with a real health check on each one and depends_on waiting for service_healthy — which is the fix for a stack that crashes on the first run and works on the second.

What it does
Generates a docker-compose.yml
You give it
A service name, a port and the services you need
You get back
A compose file with health checks and volumes
Best for
A local development stack

About the Docker Compose Generator

Pick the services your application needs and this writes the compose file: your app, the databases and caches beside it, the connection strings wired between them, and a named volume for anything that must survive a docker compose down.

The health checks are the part worth having. `depends_on` on its own only waits for a container to start, not for the service inside it to be ready — which is why an application so often crashes on the first run and works on the second. Every database here declares a health check and the app waits on `service_healthy`, so the stack comes up in the right order every time. The obsolete top-level `version:` key is left out, because Compose v2 ignores it and warns about it.

Key features of the Docker Compose Generator

Health checks that mean something

pg_isready, mysqladmin ping, redis-cli ping — and the app waits on service_healthy, not merely on the container having started.

Connection strings wired up

The DATABASE_URL in your app matches the credentials in the database service, because both are generated from the same fields.

Named volumes for anything durable

So docker compose down does not take your development database with it.

The node_modules trap avoided

An anonymous volume keeps the image’s node_modules, so a host install for a different platform cannot shadow it.

No obsolete version key

Compose v2 ignores it and warns about it, so the file starts at services: where it should.

How to use the Docker Compose Generator

  1. 1

    Name your service

The service name and the port it listens on.

  2. 2

    Add what it needs

Postgres, MySQL, MariaDB, Mongo, Redis, nginx, Mailpit, MinIO, RabbitMQ, Elasticsearch or Adminer.

  3. 3

    Set the database details

Name, user and password — these become both the container environment and the connection string.

  4. 4

    Save and run

Save as docker-compose.yml, then docker compose up.

Frequently asked questions

Compose v2 ignores it entirely and prints a deprecation warning when it is there. The schema is now inferred, so the file starts straight at services:.
