About the CSV to Markdown Table

Markdown tables are unpleasant to write by hand and worse to edit, because every cell has to be padded to keep the source readable. Paste the data instead — from a CSV file, a tab-separated export, or straight out of Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.

The delimiter is detected automatically, so a copy-paste from a spreadsheet works without picking anything. Columns are padded so the raw Markdown lines up in a code editor, pipes inside a cell are escaped so they do not split it, and line breaks become
so a multi-line cell survives. Column alignment can be set to left, centre or right, which Markdown expresses through the colons in the divider row.

Key features of the CSV to Markdown Table

Paste straight from a spreadsheet

A copy from Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers is tab-separated, which is detected automatically with nothing to configure.

Pipes escaped

A pipe inside a cell is escaped so it stays in its column instead of splitting the row — the usual reason a pasted table comes out broken.

Columns padded

The raw Markdown lines up in an editor, which matters because someone will have to edit it later by hand.

Alignment options

Left, centre or right, expressed through the colons in the divider row that Markdown uses.

Multi-line cells survive

Line breaks inside a cell become
, since a Markdown table row has to stay on one line.
