Quick Tool Overview

The Average Calculator finds the mean, median, mode and range of a list of numbers, along with the count, sum, minimum and maximum. Showing them together is deliberate: "average" on its own is ambiguous, and the choice changes the story your data tells.

About the Average Calculator

Paste a list of numbers separated by commas, spaces or line breaks and get the four averages side by side: the mean, the median, the mode and the range, along with the count, the sum, and the smallest and largest values.

Showing them together is deliberate, because average on its own is ambiguous and the choice changes the story. The mean is pulled by outliers, so one huge salary lifts the mean pay for a whole team, while the median sits in the middle and ignores how extreme the extremes are. If the mean and the median are far apart your data is skewed, and that gap is usually the most interesting thing on the page.

Key features of the Average Calculator

Four averages side by side

Mean, median, mode and range are shown together rather than making you pick one and hope.

Skew made visible

If the mean and median are far apart your data is skewed, and that gap is usually the most interesting thing on the page.

Flexible input

Paste numbers separated by commas, spaces or line breaks — straight out of a spreadsheet column if you like.

Supporting totals

Count, sum, smallest and largest are reported alongside, which is often what you actually needed.

Handles decimals and negatives

Any real numbers work, not just whole positive ones.

How to use the Average Calculator

  1. 1

    Paste your numbers

Separate them with commas, spaces or line breaks. A column copied from a spreadsheet pastes in directly.

  2. 2

    Read the averages

Mean, median, mode and range are calculated live as you type.

  3. 3

    Compare mean and median

A large gap between them tells you outliers are skewing the mean, so the median may describe your data better.

Frequently asked questions

The mean is the total divided by how many numbers there are. The median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted. The median is more robust because a single extreme value barely moves it, while it can shift the mean a long way.
