Generate deterministic UUIDs from a namespace and a name.
For anything that is not literally a DNS name or a URL, generate one random v4 UUID, keep it, and use it as your own namespace forever.
The UUID v5 Generator derives a deterministic identifier from a namespace and a name using SHA-1, so the same pair always produces the same UUID — on any machine, in any language.
A version 5 UUID is not random. It is a SHA-1 hash of a namespace and a name, folded into the UUID format, which means the same pair always produces the same identifier — on any machine, in any language, forever.
That determinism is the whole point. It lets two systems derive the same id for the same thing without coordinating, which is how you give stable identifiers to entities that already have a natural key: a domain name, a URL, a file path, a product code. The four standard namespaces from RFC 4122 are built in, and you can supply your own namespace UUID for a private scheme — which is what you should do rather than overloading the DNS namespace.
The output matches Python’s uuid5, PHP’s ramsey/uuid and every other correct implementation, which is what makes it useful across systems.
DNS, URL, OID and X.500 are built in, and you can supply your own namespace UUID for a private scheme.
Paste a list of names to get one UUID per line, which is how you backfill ids for existing records.
The implementation reproduces the worked example in RFC 4122, so there is no doubt it agrees with everyone else.
Anyone who knows the namespace and name can compute the id, so it must never be used as a secret token.
DNS, URL, OID or X.500, or paste your own namespace UUID.
The value being identified — a domain, a URL, a path or any string.
The same namespace and name always produce the same UUID, on any implementation.
Paste a list of names to get one UUID per line.
Version 3 uses MD5 and version 5 uses SHA-1. Both are deterministic and neither is used for security, so v5 is preferred simply because MD5 has no reason to be chosen for anything new.
The break does not matter here, because v5 is not a security mechanism — it is a way of deriving a stable identifier. Never use a v5 UUID as an unguessable token, though: anyone who knows the namespace and name can compute it.
Yes, for anything that is not literally a DNS name or a URL. Generate a random v4 UUID once, write it down, and use it as your namespace forever.
Yes. v5 is fully specified, so Python's uuid5, PHP's ramsey/uuid and Node's uuid all produce identical output for the same namespace and name.
