Unwrap Text

Remove hard line breaks so paragraphs flow again.

Quick Tool Overview

Unwrap Text removes the hard line breaks inside paragraphs so text reflows, while keeping the breaks that were deliberate. Blank lines, list markers, indented lines and lines noticeably shorter than the rest are all recognised as real breaks and kept.

About the Unwrap Text

Hard-wrapped text is fine in a terminal and awful everywhere else. Pasted into a word processor or a web form it keeps its old line breaks, so the paragraph is ragged at a width that no longer matches anything.

Unwrapping removes those breaks and lets the text reflow, and the whole difficulty is knowing which breaks to remove. A blank line is a paragraph break and must stay. A line ending in a full stop might end a paragraph or might just be a wrapped line that happened to end there. A list item starts a new line deliberately. This tool applies those rules: blank lines survive, list markers and indentation start new lines, quote prefixes are stripped and rejoined, and short lines are treated as deliberate breaks rather than wraps.

Key features of the Unwrap Text

Knows which breaks were deliberate

Blank lines, list items, indented lines and short lines keep their break; wrapped lines are rejoined.

Adjustable short-line threshold

Tune how short a line has to be before it counts as a deliberate break rather than a wrap.

Quote markers handled

The "> " prefixes of a quoted reply are stripped before rejoining and can be reapplied afterwards.

Lists survive

Bullets, dashes, asterisks and numbered items always start a new line rather than being absorbed.

Hyphenation repaired

A word split across a line break with a hyphen is rejoined into one word.

Frequently asked questions

It removes a break when the line before it is long enough to have been wrapped and the line after continues the sentence. Blank lines, list markers, indented lines and lines noticeably shorter than the rest are treated as deliberate breaks and kept.
