Sort a list into reverse alphabetical order.
Sort Lines Z–A orders a list from Z to A, sorting descending directly rather than sorting ascending and flipping — which matters whenever items tie. It shares the natural number handling and locale-aware comparison of the A–Z sorter.
Reverse alphabetical order is not just alphabetical order read backwards — it is a different sort, and getting there by sorting A–Z and then flipping the list gives the wrong answer whenever the sort is not perfectly stable.
This sorts descending directly. It uses the same locale-aware, natural-number comparison as the A–Z sorter, so numbered items order correctly and accented letters land where a reader expects. It is the sort you want when the most recent, the highest-lettered or the last alphabetically is the one that matters — version strings, dated filenames and reverse leaderboards being the common cases.
Rather than sorting ascending and reversing, which also flips the order of any tied items.
Version 10 correctly precedes version 2 in a descending sort, because the digits are read as numbers.
Accented letters land where a reader expects rather than at the end of the alphabet.
Fold case for a human-readable order and drop repeats in the same operation.
Empty lines are dropped rather than collecting at one end of the sorted result.
One item per line, in any order.
Natural ordering handles embedded numbers; strict ordering compares character by character.
Ignore case for a human-readable order, and remove duplicates in the same pass if you need to.
The descending list is ready to copy or download.
It gives the same result for a simple list, but it sorts descending directly rather than sorting ascending and flipping. That matters for lists with equal keys, where flipping would also reverse the order of the tied items.
With natural ordering on, item 10 comes before item 2, because 10 is the larger number. That is the correct descending order, even though it looks unusual next to a character-by-character sort.
They are removed rather than sorted, since a run of blank lines at the top or bottom of a sorted list is never useful. The count of removed lines is shown.
Not in this tool — it sorts by the whole line from the start. For sorting a name list by surname, put the surname first or use Find and Replace to reorder the fields before sorting.
