About the SCSS to CSS

Compiles the SCSS people actually write into the CSS a browser reads. Nesting is flattened into full selectors, & is resolved in every position it can appear, variables are substituted, mixins are expanded with their arguments, and nested property blocks are joined.

It is a subset, and the tool is explicit about where the edges are. The arithmetic that a spacing scale uses works, including unit handling. @use, @forward, maps, control directives and the Sass module functions are not implemented, and any file using one is told so rather than being quietly mis-compiled. For a snippet from a blog post, a partial you want to understand, or a quick check of what your nesting actually produces, that subset is the whole job.

Key features of the SCSS to CSS

& resolved everywhere

&:hover, &--modifier and & .child each mean something different, and the output shows which one you actually wrote.

Mixins with arguments

@mixin and @include including default parameter values, expanded inline the way Sass does it.

Nested properties joined

A font: { size: … } block becomes font-size, which is the feature people forget SCSS has.

Arithmetic with units

The spacing-scale maths works, and mixed units that cannot be reduced are left alone rather than guessed at.

Explicit about its limits

@use, @forward, maps and control directives are named as unsupported rather than quietly producing wrong CSS.

    Check the warnings

Anything unsupported or undefined is named rather than silently skipped.

  4. 4

    Copy the result

Plain CSS, indented the way you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Variables, nesting with & in any position, nested property blocks, @mixin and @include with arguments and defaults, @media nesting, comments and arithmetic. That covers most component-level SCSS.
